Built In Finland, Built To Be Specified

Valtra has always sold itself on being built the way you want it. Every tractor that leaves Suolahti is made to order, and the Unlimited studio will go further still if the standard options do not cover the job. Owners tend to think about their tractors the same way: as machines specified for particular work, not as something taken off a shelf. Which is a reasonable way to think about the engine software too.

We have been remapping Valtra equipment since 2014. Our platform covers the A Series, the C and XM Series, the M Series, the four-cylinder N Series, the six-cylinder T Series, the S Series flagships and the narrow F Series built for orchard and vineyard work. Every calibration is written in-house by our UK R&D team for the specific engine in front of us.

Fuel is the largest controllable cost on most farms and it is where a Valtra remap pays for itself first. By adjusting injection pressure and timing we improve fuel efficiency by between 5% and 15% on most machines. The savings arrive soonest where the engine is loaded and staying loaded: heavy cultivation, ploughing in difficult ground, loaded haulage on the road.

Torque is where the driver notices. Valtra built its reputation on four-cylinder tractors that pull like something bigger, and the N Series in particular is often asked to do work that would otherwise need a six. Adding torque low down is exactly what suits that: the tractor holds its speed through the heavy going instead of the transmission stepping back, and the loader work stops feeling like a compromise. On a Versu or a Direct the change is smoother again, because there is less shifting for the transmission to do in the first place.

Valtras also do a lot of work that is not field work. Forestry haulage, yard duty, muck and grain carting, hours on the road between blocks. A tractor that spends half its life pulling a loaded trailer benefits from a remap in a way that a tractor doing light draft work does not, and the fuel figures follow accordingly.

If you are weighing up a bigger tractor, it is worth checking what the one in the yard can already do. In a lot of cases you already own the machine you were about to go and buy.

None of it comes at the cost of reliability. We calibrate within the safe operating limits of the engine and the transmission behind it, because there is no sense in adding torque the driveline was never specified to carry. Every remap starts with a full diagnostic health check, the original map is backed up before we touch anything, and the software carries a lifetime warranty against malfunction.

Understanding Valtra Engine Platforms

Valtra sits within AGCO and its engines come from AGCO Power, built in Finland. That matters more than it sounds, because it means one small family of engines covers an unusually wide spread of the range. Below 200hp it is 3.3, 3.4, 4.4 and 4.9 litres in four-cylinder form. Above that the sixes take over: 6.6 and 7.4 litres through the T Series and 8.4 litres in the S Series.

The 4.4-litre is the clearest example we have of what that means for remapping. On our platform it appears in the A Series at 100hp, in the C Series from 120hp to 150hp, in the M and XM Series across the same span, and right across the N Series from 112hp in the N101 up to 150hp in the N141. One engine, five model ranges, and a 50hp spread between the mildest version and the strongest. The tractors are different. The block is not.

Realise The Full Potential

The sixes tell the same story on a bigger scale. In the T Series the 6.6-litre runs from 120hp in the T120 up to 200hp in the T202, and the 7.4-litre carries on to 271hp in the T254. In the S Series a single 8.4-litre covers the entire range, from 270hp in the S233 to 405hp in the S394. That is 135hp of difference from one block, with nothing separating the two ends but calibration and cooling.

The same pattern shows up inside single models. We hold calibrations for the N124 at both 125hp and 135hp, for the N154e at 155hp and 165hp, and for the N174 at 165hp and 185hp, all on almost identical hardware. Six of the S Series models appear twice as well, once at Tier 4 and once at Tier 5, and we understand and allow for the differences between Tier 5 and the older Tier 4 machines. When the manufacturer itself is willing to sell you the same engine at two different power figures, the question of whether there is headroom answers itself.

That headroom is real, but it has a limit and the limit is not always the engine. The transmission, the axles and the linkage all have design ceilings of their own, and a calibration that ignores them costs somebody a gearbox. Finding where the headroom actually ends is the job.

The Health Check First

Every job starts with a full diagnostic health check. If there is a fault sitting on the machine, we want to know before we touch the software, not after. Once it has a clean bill of health, we back the original map up to our own server, so the tractor can be returned to its factory calibration at any point in the future.

Connect and Calibrate

Calibration is performed via the OBD port on most Valtras, though some ECUs require bench access. Your agent will confirm which applies when the work is booked. Most installations are completed within a few hours.

PTO Power Verification

Where possible, we then verify the result on a PTO dynamometer, the only accurate way to measure what a tractor delivers at the shaft. Although not all of our agents can PTO test on-site, you still get an accurate value because we test all our maps on our dyno at our HQ.

Quick, Clean & Reversible

In most cases your ECU remap will be carried out at your yard or farm by one of our local authorised agents. This makes sure machines are back to work swiftly, usually within hours. If you're close to our HQ, just outside Bristol, you are welcome to bring the machine to us and our R&D team will carry out the work, including a dyno test.

Flexible Service For Valtra Operators

Most Valtra remaps are carried out on the farm. We have a network of 400+ trained and authorised agents across the UK and internationally, and your local agent arrives with everything needed for the diagnostic check, the install and, where possible, the PTO verification. In the middle of drilling or harvest that matters, because the tractor is back at work the same day.

If you are based in the South West, or not too far from our HQ just outside Bristol, you are welcome to bring the machine to us. Our workshop has full dyno facilities, and you get direct access to the R&D team who wrote the calibration.

Common Questions About Valtra Remapping

A:

A remap is a modification to the engine software and manufacturers can decline warranty claims relating to it. Most of the machines we work on are past the manufacturer warranty period. If yours is still inside it, speak to your dealer first and then to us, and we will tell you whether it is worth waiting.

A:

No. We calibrate inside the torque input the transmission was designed around, whether that is a HiTech, a Versu or a Direct. We will not write a map that puts more through the driveline than it was specified to carry, even where the engine could produce it.

A:

No. We work within the safe operating limits of the engine and everything behind it. Every job begins with a diagnostic health check, and if the machine has a problem we will tell you before we touch the software.

A:

Usually more than owners expect. The 4.4-litre in an N101 is almost the same engine Valtra sells at 150hp in the N141, so the lower-rated tractors in the range tend to have the most to give. We will tell you what your specific variant is capable of before you commit to anything.

A:

Between 5% and 15% on most machines. The biggest savings come from engines that spend their working life under load, so heavy cultivation and loaded haulage show it soonest. Light work on a big tractor will show less.
