With 56 Volvo model pages on our platform and a global network of more than 300 trained and authorised agents, we develop Volvo-specific calibrations that improve power, torque and fuel efficiency

A Trusted Brand, Improved

Volvo Trucks has been building commercial vehicles since 1928, and the Swedish manufacturer's reputation for engineering quality, safety and fuel efficiency has made it one of the most trusted brands on UK roads. From the FH and FH16 long-haul tractors that rack up millions of motorway miles every year to the FM and FMX workhorses that handle distribution and construction, Volvo builds its entire range around a small number of proven diesel engine platforms. That engineering consistency is what makes Volvo trucks particularly well-suited to ECU remapping.

Mapped To Your Requirements

Our R&D team has developed remaps for the full range of Volvo diesel engines, from the 7-litre D7E through the 11-litre D11K and 13-litre D13K to the 17-litre D17, which replaced the legendary D16K in 2024. With 56 Volvo model pages on our platform and a global network of more than 300 trained and authorised agents, we develop Volvo-specific calibrations that improve power, torque and fuel efficiency without compromising the reliability your operation depends on.

The Smart Business Case For Volvo Remapping

For any transport operation, fuel is where the money goes. Our Volvo remaps are calibrated to improve combustion efficiency, which means your trucks burn less diesel while covering the same routes and carrying the same loads. Across a fleet putting hundreds of thousands of miles on the clock each year, that adds up fast.

We typically see consumption drop by 5% to 15%, depending on the engine, the loads being carried, and how the truck is driven. When you scale those savings across every vehicle in your fleet, the numbers become hard to ignore.

Reduced fuel bills are only the starting point. A remapped Volvo delivers noticeably more torque lower in the rev range, and that changes the character of the truck under load. The I-Shift gearbox works more efficiently with a broader torque spread, which means fewer gear changes on gradients and smoother, more consistent progress with a full trailer behind. Drivers feel the difference within the first few miles. A truck that pulls more confidently is less tiring to drive over a ten-hour shift, and that matters for fleet managers focused on fatigue management and driver retention.

If you're running one or two trucks rather than a fleet, the same benefits apply on a more personal level. Your Volvo already performs well, but a remap unlocks the power and torque the factory map holds back. Long runs feel less laboured, loaded climbs are noticeably stronger, and the fuel savings help offset running costs that keep going up.

Any change to a working truck needs to stack up commercially and be safe. Our Volvo remaps are built by our UK-based R&D team around the specific tolerances of each engine platform. We do not push hardware past what it was designed to withstand, and every remap is backed by a lifetime software warranty. Before any work starts, we carry out a full diagnostic check to ensure the engine and its systems are in good condition. The original factory map is stored on a secure server, so the process can be reversed whenever you choose, and the truck can be back in service the same day.

Understanding Volvo Engine Platforms

Volvo builds its truck range around a modular powertrain system, pairing proven engine platforms with different cab configurations and chassis setups to cover everything from urban distribution to the heaviest long-haul work. For remapping purposes, this matters. The same D13K engine that powers an FH 460 long-haul tractor also sits in the FM and FMX in different states of tune, which means our R&D team can develop deep expertise in each platform and apply it across the entire Volvo range.

Maximising Performance With Precision

The current Volvo diesel lineup covers five main engine families. The 5-litre D5K is a four-cylinder unit producing 210 to 240hp, designed for the FL urban distribution truck. The 7-litre D7E and its successor, the D8K, are six-cylinder engines rated from 240 to 320hp, powering the FE and lighter FM applications. The 11-litre D11K is a six-cylinder engine available from 330 to 460hp, with torque outputs from 1,600 to 2,300 Nm, and it handles medium- to heavy regional work across the FM and FMX ranges. The 13-litre D13K is the backbone of the Volvo truck range, a six-cylinder unit available from 420 to 540hp that powers the FH, FM and FMX across long-distance haulage, distribution and construction applications. At the top sits the D17, Volvo's new 17-litre six-cylinder engine, introduced in 2024 to replace the D16K, available in 600, 700 and 780hp configurations, with torque up to 3,800 Nm for the FH16.

Volvo uses the same engine block across multiple power ratings within each family. A D13K rated at 420hp from the factory shares its core architecture with the 540hp version. The difference in output comes down to software calibration rather than hardware. Fuel maps, injection timing, boost pressure targets and torque limiters are all set conservatively to allow the engine to run reliably across a wide range of climates and operating conditions. That built-in headroom is what makes Volvo trucks so receptive to remapping. The hardware is engineered to handle more than the factory map asks of it.

Volvo trucks use TRW engine management systems, primarily the EMS2.2 in earlier models. EMS2.3 from around 2014 and the EMS2.4 from around 2020. Our R&D team has mapped the calibration architectures on all TRW systems and developed remaps that meet the precise tolerances of each generation.

Our remaps for Volvo trucks deliver real, measurable gains across the range. Here are some examples:

How We Remap Your Volvo

How We Remap Your Volvo

Image - Volvo

Initial Diagnostics

We begin every Volvo remap with a thorough diagnostic assessment. Our agents review the ECU data, check for stored fault codes, and confirm that the engine and its ancillary systems are operating as they should. If anything needs attention, we deal with it before the remap goes ahead. There is no point in tuning a truck that has an underlying issue.

Original Map Saved

With the diagnostics complete, we save a full copy of the original Volvo factory map to a dedicated server. That copy is kept indefinitely, so if you ever need to return to the standard calibration, whether for resale, a warranty inspection, or any other reason, we can reinstate it.

New Map Installed

In most cases, the remap is installed through the truck's OBD diagnostic port. Our agents connect to the TRW EMS unit, upload the new calibration, and verify that everything is reading correctly. EMS2.3 and 2.4 require a direct connection to the ECU, so we use a special cable. That means the ECU can normally stay in place on the side of the engine block, and we can just connect our harness to it.

Non-invasive & Fast

For some older EMS2-equipped trucks or specific ECU configurations, bench tuning may be required, where the unit is carefully removed and connected directly. Either way, the process is non-invasive, and the truck is typically back in service within a few hours. Most of our HGV remapping work is carried out at your premises, whether that's a depot, yard or workshop, so your trucks stay where they need to be, and downtime is kept to an absolute minimum. Alternatively, you can bring your truck to our headquarters just outside Bristol in the South West of England, where we will carry out the work.

Flexible Service For Volvo Operators

Most of our Volvo truck remapping is carried out at your premises by one of our trained and authorised agents. Whether you're operating out of a haulage depot, a distribution centre or a workshop, we come to you. Your trucks stay on-site, and the disruption to your operation is minimal. You're also welcome to bring your truck to our headquarters just outside Bristol if you prefer.

Our agent network covers the UK and extends internationally, so wherever your fleet is based, there's likely an authorised Avon Tuning HD installer within reach. Every agent in our network has completed our training programme and works with our UK-developed remap files, so you get the same quality of calibration regardless of location.

For fleet operators running multiple Volvo trucks, we can schedule remaps across your fleet in phases to avoid taking too many vehicles out of service at once. If you'd like to start with one or two trucks to see the results before committing to the rest of the fleet, that works too.

Common Questions About Volvo Remapping

A:

Volvo's standard warranty terms do not cover aftermarket ECU modifications, so a remap could affect your warranty status for engine-related claims. In practice, many operators remap trucks that are already outside the warranty period or weigh the fuel savings against the remaining warranty value. We always recommend checking your specific warranty terms before proceeding, and we're happy to discuss this with you.

A:

The remap itself is typically completed within a few hours, including the diagnostic health check beforehand and verification afterwards. Work is usually carried out at your premises, though you can also bring your truck to our headquarters near Bristol.

A:

Our remaps are developed with the specific operating parameters of each Volvo engine platform in mind. We work within the safe limits of the hardware, and the gains we achieve reflect headroom that Volvo has already engineered into the engine. Every remap comes with a lifetime software warranty, and your original factory map is backed up so we can restore it at any time.

A:

It varies by engine, load profile, route type and driving style. Our data show typical reductions of 5% to 15% in fuel consumption, with the strongest results on underpowered trucks hauling heavy loads along A roads, where the engine works hardest, and the extra torque makes the biggest difference. Drivers use less throttle to maintain speed under load, which further reduces consumption over time.

A:

Yes. Our agents carry out all HGV work at your premises, and we can phase the remaps across your fleet so that you're never taking too many trucks off the road at once. Some fleet operators prefer to start with a couple of trucks and evaluate the results before rolling out across the rest of the fleet.

A:

We have over 300 authorised agents across the UK and internationally. Use our agent locator to find your nearest installer, or contact us, and we'll connect you with an agent who covers your area.

A:

Fully. Your original Volvo factory map is saved to a secure server before we make any changes. If you decide to revert to the standard calibration at any time, we will restore it free of charge.
